CranioSacral Therapy FAQs
What is CranioSacral Therapy (CST)?
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a highly effective light-touch form of bodywork that releases tensions in the central nervous system. This allows every other system in the body to relax and self-correct. By addressing the central nervous system directly, CranioSacral Therapy enhances the body’s own healing processes. During a session a deep sense of inner stillness and peace is experienced. This state of stillness creates the right environment for the body to heal itself.
The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and fluid that surround and support the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the head (cranium) down to the bones at the base of the spine (sacrum), hence the name. This system is intricately connected with the rest of the body. Therefore by gently creating changes in the craniosacral system the body can self-correct
A CST session “is like having a massage for my soul.”
~Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

How does CST work?
Every day you endure stresses and strains and your body absorbs them. But your body can only handle so much tension before the tissues begin to tighten and potentially affect the brain and spinal cord. This can compromise the function of the central nervous system – and the performance of nearly every other system in the body. CST releases those tensions to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct.
Using a gentle touch – starting with about the weight of a nickel – the practitioner evaluates your internal environment. Then she uses light-touch techniques to release any restrictions she finds. By freeing the central nervous system to perform at its best, CST naturally eliminates pain and stress, strengthens your resistance to disease, and enhances your health and well-being. CST along with SomatoEmotional Release (SER) can help release trauma that might be stored in the body at a cellular level. CST’s effect on the parasympathetic nervous system improves emotional well-being addressing anxiety and other mood challenges.
Many of our life’s experiences are stored in our bodies. Even when a person recognizes a surgery or other intervention or experience to be necessary, on the cellular level the body might still register the event as traumatic. During CST I gently place my hands under your head, sacrum, feet and along the spine while monitoring changes that support your body’s own healing potential.
What will I experience during a session?
Experiences during a CST session vary from session to session and client to client. At times, a client may deeply relax or even fall asleep. Other times, s/he may talk recalling memories or expressing emotions. Some clients remain still during the entire session, hardly noticing the practitioner’s evaluation and treatment. Others will experience sensations within the body as this process is carried out. Each experience is completely unique.
You will remain fully clothed lying down on a very comfortable massage table. Please wear comfortable clothes. The therapist uses only five grams of pressure, roughly the weight of a nickel, to test for restrictions in various parts of the head and spine. It’s often possible for the evaluation alone to remove the restrictions and allow the body to correct itself.
This gentle technique removes stress and tension off of the nervous system having a calming and balancing effect on the body and mental state. When appropriate, your therapist will add gentle dialog to facilitate the process of releasing from the mind and body the residual effect of traumatic experiences.
How many treatments will I need?
A series of three to five treatments is recommended to start. Sometimes one session is all the client needs. Sometimes it takes more than three to get the results the client wants. Each client is unique and will heal in their own unique way.
I have known Evelyn for many years now both on a professional and a personal level. As a nurse practitioner, I have referred several of my clients to her for prenatal massage, CST and to attend her various classes. Personally, I have gone to Evelyn for massage, CST and to attend her women’s circles. I find Evelyn to be the most peaceful, calm, compassionate human being I have ever met. When you are with her, she makes you feel like you are the only other person on the planet. Her CST sessions are indescribable. After a session, I always feel peaceful, centered and most importantly, present. We are very fortunate to have Evelyn and the Red Tent Collective in our area. -Darlean E.

I highly recommend a session with Evelyn. I had a CST session with her right after my son had a seizure episode, which was very traumatic for both of us.
